Are you an experienced Optometrist seeking a rewarding contract opportunity where your skills directly serve a community in need? The Fort Duchesne Health Center, part of Indian Health Services (IHS), is hiring a full-time Contract Optometrist to join our team in the scenic and culturally rich area of Fort Duchesne, Utah.
This IHS facility plays a vital role in addressing the distinct health and social needs of the reservation community, blending modern healthcare with traditional values. As part of our dedicated team, you’ll contribute to essential public health services, including nursing, social work, mental health, nutrition education, and substance abuse support, helping improve lives across generations.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for providing full-scope primary eye care independently delivering high-quality, comprehensive exams, diagnoses, and treatment plans without the support of technicians or nurses. Your scope will include:
- Comprehensive ophthalmic and medical history review and documentation
- Diagnosis and management of ocular conditions
- Prescription of eyewear, contact lenses, and medications
- Ordering and interpreting ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic tests
- Minor procedures (e.g., foreign body removal, papilloma excision)
- Pre- and post-operative care
- Coordinating referrals and follow-up care
Position Details:
- Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Adults and Pediatrics
- Full-time, up to a 1-year contract with possible extensions
- Located at Fort Duchesne Health Center (see facility details here)
Requirements:
- 2–3 years of experience in family optometry
- Previous Locum Tenens experience preferred
- BLS certification required
- Valid license in any U.S. state
- Experience working independently in clinical settings

Requirements
- Must be a licensed Optometrist
- Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Must have current BLS, Basic Life Support certification
- Certification of Education - copy of diploma or transcripts
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
- DEA license and eligibility to prescribe medication
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in Optometry
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Strong diagnostic, clinical, organizational and time-management skills
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems
- Must be a US citizen living primarily in the United States
- Willingness to comply with all state and federal regulations regarding medical practice
- must be willing to undergo a federal background check
