PSD Enrico Fermi Institute: HEP
About the Department
The Enrico Fermi Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit within
the Division of Physical Sciences of the University of Chicago. The
Institute\'s activities include the following: string theory and
theoretical high-energy physics, experimental high-energy physics,
theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, experimental particle
astrophysics, infrared and optical astronomy, cosmic microwave
background observations, general relativity and gravitational waves, and
cosmochemistry.
Job Summary
The CERN Technologist job involves performing routine assignments
related to engineering activities to establish operating data and
conduct experimental tests for assigned functions or departments within
the university. Designs modifies and tests electronic systems and
equipment. Confers with management to determine engineering feasibility
and cost-effectiveness. Requires knowledge and experience in own
discipline while acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. This is a
one-year position from June 20, 2025, through August 1, 2026.
Responsibilities
Detector Calibration- Data from the calorimeter section of the
detector is acquired from 20,000 analog readout channels. The
response of the individual channels can be measured by injecting
standardized test signals. This data must be analyzed to determine
the calibration constants of each channel as well as the proper
operation over the full dynamic range of signal amplitudes. This
information must be monitored and updated on a weekly basis, and
anomalies must be diagnosed
Study of Test Systems - A unique laboratory has been set up with a
slice of the operational detector. This system is used to track
stability, understand anomalies, and test new software and hardware
techniques. Will work with the electronics, power supplies, and
mechanical systems which constitute this test setup; may also work
with the control software, if needed
On-Detector Maintenance - During a few months each year, the ATLAS
detector is taken off-line for maintenance work. These individuals
will work with the maintenance team to repair any readout channels
with faulty behavior
Has limited authority on construction, installation, operation,
maintenance, repair, and development of new, modified, and existing
systems and of electric or electronic components, equipment,
systems, etc.
Analyzes equipment to establish operating data and conduct
experimental tests
Performs development activities, including drawing board layout and
interpretation and implementation of project specifications and
documentation requirements. Provides drafting and design services by
preparing and maintaining blueprints, maps and engineering,
architectural, or electrical drawings
Performs other related work as needed
