DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This position involves responsibility for the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of City swimming pools and auxiliary equipment. The incumbent is also responsible for the chemical treatment of swimming pools to maintain a high level of water purity. Work is performed under the direction of the Park Maintenance Supervisor with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgment in planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers and seasonal helpers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Leads and participates in the cleaning, adjustments, and repair of swimming pools and auxiliary equipment; Leads and participates in the minor plumbing, masonry, and electrical repair; Leads and participates in the chemical treatment of swimming pools to purify the water; Leads and participates in the cleaning and repair of the pool filter system; Adjusts and performs minor repairs to heating and pumping equipment; Maintains records of time and material expended, supplies inventory, and workload projections.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of common practices and procedures of swimming pool operations and cleaning and
maintenance activities; working knowledge of filtration systems and chemicals used for purifying water; ability to instruct and direct the work of others; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; skill in the operation of pool maintenance equipment; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
One year of experience as a Journeyman Plumber; or
One year of experience in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of swimming pools; or
Two years of experience involving the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, filters, or other
equipment similar to that used in swimming pool operation ; or
An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (a), (b), and (c)
above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Qualifying swimming pool treatment operator shall mean an individual
possessing evidence of the successful completion of either of the following courses:
A New York State Department of Health Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification Course
Type A or B; or
An adequate course of instruction regarding the safe and effective operation and maintenance of pool
treatment equipment.
