Come join the Aviation & Federal global practice at Burns & McDonnell as a Senior Electrical Engineer! The electrical team focuses on building power, lighting, grounding, lightning protection, and low-voltage design.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will join dynamic project teams to deliver world-class designs for cutting-edge projects across aviation and federal sectors. This includes designing infrastructure for airports, military facilities, hangars, industrial labs, and government facilities for clients such as commercial airlines, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy.
From secure military installations to bustling airports, the engineer will collaborate throughout the design and construction process, customizing electrical systems to meet budget constraints, aligning with technical requirements, and ensuring solutions tailored to client specifications.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of building electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, lightning protection, and low-voltage systems.
Serve as a technical expert on airport, federal, and defense projects, ensuring designs meet strict security, code compliance, and performance standards.
Guide project teams in delivering world-class infrastructure for clients such as commercial airlines, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy.
Coordinate closely with architects, mechanical engineers, and other disciplines to ensure fully integrated design solutions.
Conduct site investigations, condition assessments, and field verifications as needed to inform design and construction activities.
Prepare electrical calculations, detailed drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents using Revit, AutoCAD, and other design tools.
Lead or support electrical system modeling and analysis, including short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies.
Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and presentations, effectively communicating complex technical information.
Manage electrical scope, schedule, and budget on assigned projects, ensuring deliverables are on time and within budget.
Mentor junior engineers and designers, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.
Support construction-phase services, including submittal reviews, RFIs, field support, and final inspections.
Familiarity with UFC, NEC, NFPA, and federal design standards is preferred.
Familiarity with buildings and vertical construction is preferred.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 7 years of electrical engineering experience required. Consulting experience is preferred.
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 7 years electrical engineering experience required. Consulting experience is preferred.
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 6 years of electrical engineering experience required. Consulting experience is preferred.
Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design, NEC, ANSI and IEEE Standards. Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Strong computer skills include Revit, AutoCAD, 2D and 3D rendering programs and other analysis programs preferred.
Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
Ability to travel.
Professional Engineer (PE) License is strongly preferred.
