electric-arc or electric induction, open-hearth, or oxygen furnaces, to
melt and refine metal before casting or to produce specified @types of
steel. 1) Inspects refractory lining prior to Electric Arc Furnace start
up, and in between heats. Applies patch and refractory coatings as
needed. 2) Assures the furnace is charged with the prescribed
proportions of scrap, alloys, and other additions. 3) Installs and
adjusts carbon electrodes. 4) Starts and regulates electrical controls
to maintain power input to accomplish prescribed rates of melting and
temperature. 5) Utilizes oxygen lance to enhance the meltdown. 6)
Monitors slag levels and conditions, adding flux as needed, and removing
slag when required. 7) Uses oxygen lance to blowdown carbon levels. 8)
Checks temperatures with pyrometers, takes samples with spoon or sampler
tubes for alloy, analysis and responds to lab feedback accordingly,
adding alloy, etc. 9) Operates furnace controls to tap heat into the
ladle. 10) Injects wire or other additions into the ladle. 11) Takes
final lab analysis and any other subsequent follow-up samples. 12)
Maintains a neat and orderly work station. 13) Reports equipment

smelted metal samples from furnaces or kettles for analysis, and
calculate @types and amounts of materials needed to ensure that materials
meet specifications. Kindle fires, and shovel fuel and other materials
into furnaces or onto conveyors by hand, with hoists, or by directing
crane operators. Observe air and temperature gauges or metal color and
fluidity, and turn fuel valves or adjust controls to maintain required
temperatures. Operate controls to move or discharge metal workpieces
from furnaces. Prepare material to load into furnaces, including
cleaning, crushing, or applying chemicals, by using crushing machines,
shovels, rakes, or sprayers. Record production data, and maintain
production logs. Remove impurities from the surface of molten metal,
using strainers. Scrape accumulations of metal oxides from floors,
molds, and crucibles, and sift and store them for reclamation. Weigh
materials to be charged into furnaces, using scales. ** OTHER
